Pandas in Africa: Namibia 2022

Day10: Brandberg

After coffee and rusks we took a drive to the foothills of the Brandberg, so called after it’s Afrikaans name, Burnt Mountain, because of the black rocks that make it look as though a fire has swept through it.

The Brandberg is a National monument and a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is an area of great cultural and natural significance, with some 50 000 rock paintings being recorded. This includes the painting of the famous White Lady, which in actual fact was incorrectly identified by Abbé Breuil (an expert on European cave art), as female but physically has male characteristics. We decided rather than hike up into the hills, to drive around and explore the area.

From the golden grass and burnt mountain outcrops we entered the Sorris Sorris Conservancy. From there we found the Ugab River bed, stopped for a picnic under some Anna Trees and found our way back to camp via the river bed. It is a wide and vast stretch of sand and must be kak terrifying when in flood, as can be witnessed by huge trees that had been brought down in previous floods.

We had hoped to come across desert elephants but saw ostriches and baboons instead. Also some nice bird life.

Once again, this morning can best be described in photos.

This afternoon we spent some time at the pool, where we bought some expensive WiFi and did some admin. Here I discovered my new fav drink for a hot day and watched the Guinea fowl.
